NEWTONE

Early Beginnings and Influences

How did you both first get into DJing and music production?

We’ve known each other since we were five years old. We went to the same elementary and high school, where our friendship grew alongside our shared passion for music. Siem's brother was already DJing, so he got into it pretty early, and Wim often joined him in their basement. Together, we learned how to play and create music, though in the beginning, it was mostly just about having fun.

Over time, we started taking things more seriously. Back then, we mostly played hip-hop and pop, which gradually evolved into disco and, later on, house as we began performing more in clubs around Amsterdam. Our sound is still evolving to this day and will probably keep changing in the future, which is part of what keeps it exciting.

Who were some of your early influences, both musically and personally?

Hard to say, this ranges from Michael Jackson to Yellow Claw to Bart Skils to Tonno Disko to Enrico Sangiuliano and everything in between.

Who were the artists or genres that initially inspired you, and how did they influence your sound?

We have been influenced by many genres, some of them are hip hop, disco, techno, house in general & UKG.

Creative Process and Sound

Has your creative process in the studio changed over the last year? Are there any new habits, tools, or routines that have helped you stay inspired?

Not per se, we did finish a one year during course in Utrecht called DPAC in which we learned a lot but that was 3 years ago already. Also we try to go as often as possible to a house near Utrecht at the water for 3 - 7 days as a music retreat in which we make tracks all day. This works very well for us since you don’t have any distractions.

Can you walk us through your creative process when producing a new track?

This differs every time, but most of the time one of us has a small start of a track or idea and we go on from there. We actually don’t use any hardware, apart from the ableton push which helps us create the melodies in our tracks. The process exists out of a lot of decisions, that we most of the time agree on. And when we don’t agree on something we always make a compromise, so a lot of our tracks exist out of compromises.

How do you approach creating a set for a live performance?

We always feed off the crowd’s energy and choose tracks accordingly, most of the time we do make a selection of tracks as guideline but we never stay in that selection.

6 Million Ways to Die

Last year and Future

In the past year, you’ve made strides with tracks such as 6 Million Ways to Die and Party Time, which have been played at major festivals. What was your best memory of the last year?

Witnessing Job Jobse playing 6 Million Ways To Die while dancing in the water at Dekmantel Selectors in Kroatia.

Were there any unexpected surprises or milestones last year that you didn’t anticipate?

We didn’t expect our tracks being played that often this year by some of our favourite dj’s and at crazy party’s.

What are your goals for the future?

We have always been dreaming of travelling to foreign countries to play. In January we’ll have our debut in Madrid so that’s close already. Also we would love to go to Australia in the future.

As a bit of an exclusive, can we expect some new releases from you, and if so, when can we expect them? Could you share a bit more about what’s coming up?

At the start of next year we’ll release a 3 track EP at Tjade’s label Agrio Club which we are really looking forward to since 2 of those tracks are our most requested ones. We might do a Bandcamp release before that. Next year we have a big project coming up which we are already planning for some time but we can’t tell much about that yet! But it will be very exciting...
